Known as Auckland Harbour, Waitemata Harbour is the main access to Auckland by sea. The Waitemata forms the north and east coast isthmus, and matched on the south by the Manukau Harbour. The harbour spans a distance of 70 square miles and connects the city's main port to the Hauraki Gulf and the Pacific Ocean. Sheltered from Pacific storms by Auckland's North Shore, Rangitoto Island and Waiheke Island, the name comes from the Maori language, Wai te Mataa referring to obsidian glass.
