Northland, situated in New Zealand's sub-tropical far north, is the birthplace of the nation; a region rich in history and culture.

The sub-tropics of New Zealand's north island consists of three main areas - west coast, east coast, and top of the north,

offering a wealth of water and land-based attractions.

The east coast is historically significant and includes the popular Bay of Islands which is famed for its white sand beaches and abundant

marine life. Poor Knights Islands Marine Reserve, situated off the Tutukaka Coast, offers some of the world's best dive sights.

On the west coast you'll find Waipoua Forest; New Zealand's largest Kauri forest. The Waipoua Forest offers a variety of walks and takes visitors to some of the oldest and largest living kauri trees; the famed Tane Mahuta 'Lord of the Forest', and Te Matua Ngahere 'Father of the Forest'.

Ngāti Kurī tribal legend says that Kupe, the great Polynesian navigator first landed in Hokianga harbour while chasing a whale which turned out to be Houhora mountain.

Some of New Zealand's oldest traces of settlement can be found in this region dating from the settlement of Kupe’s people from Cape Reinga (in the far north) to Pārengarenga Harbour (in the south).

With Northlands close proximity to Auckland and its natural beauty the region is considered an ideal luxury getaway destination.

Here you'll find a variety of exclusive recreation, leisure and relaxation experiences.

Luxury resorts offer world-class locations and award-winning service. Eagle’s Nest offers private cliff-top villas above Russell, in the Bay of Islands while Kauri Cliffs - a Relais & Chateaux hotel - overlooks Matauri Bay, east of Kerikeri.

Northland consists of 30 main townships, all within four sub-regions.
