THE GRILL (By Sean Connolly)
SkyCity Grand Hotel, 90 Federal Street, City, Auckland| 09-363 7067
For me, bringing people together is what good dining is all about. So at The Grill we take pride in offering you a relaxed, uncomplicated atmosphere. An atmosphere that complements our fresh, honest fare, simply prepared to let the natural flavours shine through. From tender pasture-fed meat to succulent sustainable seafood, you'll notice there's a distinctly Kiwi accent to our menu. In fact most of the ingredients we use are sourced locally from specially selected New Zealand suppliers, along with much of the cookware and a rather special wine list. It all helps remind us to keep things simple and authentic - and helps keep the conversation flowing too! In short, whether you're looking for a casual lunch with friends or a sophisticated dinner with clients, there's something to suit every palate. So come on down to Federal Street and enjoy life at The Grill. You'll always be welcome here. Sean Connolly.

COCO'S CANTINA
376-378 Karangahape Rd, Auckland | 09-300 7582
Coco’s Cantina, on Auckland’s infamous K Rd, is a guaranteed good night out. No bookings mean a wait at the bar if you don’t get there early, but once you do sit down, you won’t want to leave. Run by sisters Renee and Damaris Coulter, it’s all about casual, fun dining – handwritten menus, great music, cheery staff and rustic, satisfying Italian-inspired fare. The antipasto platter is top-notch (think sticks of deep-fried mozzarella and luscious mussels), as is succulent pork belly with hazelnuts and apple. Ingredients are locally sourced, free range and sustainable. Wine comes in tumblers, the cocktails are great and the barman’s a bit of a legend. A sign in the toilets reads “a person who is nice to you but not nice to the waiter is not a nice person” – a simple sentiment that sums up what Coco’s is all about.

CIBO PARNELL
91 St Georges Bay Rd, Parnell, Auckland| 09-303 9660
Cibo is a Parnell stalwart with its fair share of fans and it’s not hard to see why. Whether you eat in the light-filled dining area or opt for the pleasant courtyard, whether you’re part of a crowd of long-lunchers or an intimate twosome at night, Cibo manages to ensure you have a good time.
Co-owner Kate Fay’s menu is European with a strong nod to Asia, with interesting combinations such as ostrich tataki with horseradish smoked oyster, beetroot spelt, beetroot meringue and parmesan custard.
There’s also a good vegetarian selection – roasted field mushrooms, exotic mushroom buckwheat, polenta soldiers, sweetcorn pudding and white truffle sabayon is just one example. Service, under the direction of maitre d’ Jeremy Turner, is consistently warm and professional and the lengthy wine list excellent.

PONSONBY ROAD BISTRO
165 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby, Auckland | 09-360 1611
The bistro brief seems like such a simple one – welcoming dining room, interesting wine list, friendly staff, classic menu. And yet how many places do you know that truly nail it? Happily, Ponsonby Road Bistro does. The chic, moodily lit room works whether you’re there on a first date, family gathering or lively dinner with friends, while the affable waitstaff slant their approach to suit. The menu’s full of dishes that comfort the soul – you might begin with a plate of superlative chicken liver pâté or a bowl brimming with succulent clams, then move on to a crispy-skinned duck confit, its unctuous meat complemented by a spiced pumpkin puree, brussels sprouts and hazelnuts. Ponsonby Road Bistro has mastered the art of delivering a grown-up good time.

CAZADOR
854 Dominion Rd, Balmoral, Auckland | 09-620 8730
Cazador has long been championed by its loyal followers, but in the two years since Dariush Lolaiy took over the reins from his father Tony, he and wife Rebecca Smidt have deservedly earned this neighbourhood eatery some serious recognition on the often-unforgiving Auckland dining scene. A refit has modernised the place, revamping the bar and adding an enclosed courtyard, while cleverly retaining the original restaurant’s eclectic, bohemian feel. The impressive array of taxidermy remains, as does the game focus of the menu, such as boar chop with witloof and creamy anchovy dressing. It’s not all game, though – a simple broad bean soup impressed recently, as did a dessert of bay leaf ice-cream with pine nut shortbread. Service, led by Smidt, is engaging, and the drinks list features an impressive array of sherries.

O'CONNELL STREET BISTRO
3 O'Connell St, Auckland City | 09-377 1884
In Auckland’s competitive restaurant scene, O’Connell Street Bistro’s 17 years in business render it a classic. It’s the trusted haunt of choice for the numerous ad execs, lawyers and property moguls who count it as a neighbour, but it also plays excellent host to urbane tourists, gatherings of friends and cosy couples. It has old-fashioned values – linen napery, quality glassware, knowledgeable service – but contemporary smarts. Head chef Alex Strobach’s menu delivers plenty of the bistro favourites that the restaurant’s regulars demand as well as more intriguing options – octopus carpaccio with tempura crayfish, gremolata and saffron paprika mayonnaise is a masterclass in the layering of delicate flavours. Proprietor Chris Upton’s wine list is legendary and the fact that diners are assured of expert guidance from his waitstaff even when Upton isn’t around is testament to just how professional this operation is.

ORPHANS KITCHEN
118 Ponsonby Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland | 09-378 7979
Orphans Kitchen has a minimalist feel both indoors and out, the light and airy room dressed with rough-hewn wooden tables and metal stools adorned with squares of sheepskin.
The small but well-formed menu is a tight collection of smart, contemporary offerings that appear deceptively simple but are grounded in accomplished technique and judicious flavour pairings.
There is a genuine desire to celebrate the seasons – autumn offerings might include zucchini both grilled and raw with buffalo curd, pine nuts, olives and Meyer lemon, or rye gnocchi with a perfectly poached egg, shiitake and sage finished with a generous shaving of black Waipara truffle. If you need more than a glass of wine, check out the “bin end” offerings.

ORTOLANA
The Pavilions, 31 Tyler St, Britomart, Auckland |
It’s hard to dispute the success of the regeneration of Auckland’s Britomart, and Ortolana embodies the relaxed sophistication this downtown hotspot does so well. The light, airy dining area opens out to a courtyard of tables that allow you to watch the comings and goings at the neighbouring eateries and boutiques. The capable staff provide sparkling water on the house (a Hip Group standard), as well as cosy blankets for outdoor diners. Food is under the direction of ethically minded executive chef Jo Pearson, with much of the produce grown at the Hip Group’s farm out west. Menu descriptions are as simple as the dishes themselves – gnudi, heirloom tomato, tree nuts; or chicken cotoletta, lemon, kale salad. Neighbouring sister restaurant Milse provides divine desserts.

THE ENGINE ROOM
115 Queen St, Northcote Point, North Shore, Auckland | 09-480 9502
Newly expanded and polished, the added class of this popular bistro has not gone to its head. Natalia Schamroth wafts calmly through the close-set tables greeting regulars and new converts who have been sensible enough to book ahead. By night, dark wood, little candles and glowing filament lamps add intimacy. You may need to leave the table to take in the blackboard-menu descriptions, but they make for comforting anticipation.
Carl Koppenhagen presides over the no-nonsense menu, which likely includes duck, schnitzel (above), clams and pork in classic styles, but with interesting accompaniments and robust flavours. Twice-baked goat’s cheese souffle has many fans – so too the steak frites and the churros con chocolate. The compact wine selection has plenty of interesting options.

DEPOT
86 Federal Street, Auckland City | 09-363 7048
Rustic wooden benches and stools spill from the tiled interior on to the footpath, as New York deli meets Kiwi kitsch. From the raw bar, freshly shucked shellfish are promptly dispensed, as are shared dishes from the open chargrill, often on boards. Cutlery comes in cans and wine in glass tumblers. Ribs, cheek, hock and marrow, all carefully cooked, will delight carnivores as sliders, toasties and tortillas carry piscatorial snacks.
Dishes are beautifully balanced and pack a flavour punch. Wine on tap and a considered list counter the hard seating to keep lingerers longer. Bookings are not taken and staff will cheerfully advise on likely delay. If you want information on the food, you’ll need to ask, but staff are responsive and keen. As Al Brown’s casual-dining empire continues to expand, Depot remains a firm favourite.

BADUZZI
Corner Jellicoe Street, Fish Lane, North Wharf, Auckland | 09-309 9339
Baduzzi offers an Italian fix with a stop-off in New York for styling and menu tips. It’s a labour of love for owner Michael Dearth (above right), who also owns The Grove. Benjamin Bayly (centre, sporting a Movember look with Baduzzi head chef Glen File) is executive chef at both eateries and his innovation and dedication shine through in Baduzzi’s rustic yet labour-intensive menu as much as in the dishes he creates at the more formal offering. Baduzzi means meatballs and here they are taken seriously. Well-seasoned crayfish and savoy cabbage meatballs served with a gutsy carrot sauce are very good, as are the grilled Wagyu versions with onion gravy and salsa verde. Other stars included buttered maltagliati with duck and porcini ragu and quality wood-fired meats. Knowledgeable staff guide you through a wine list rich with lesser-known Italian imports.

PROVENANCE
791 SH 16, Waimauku, Auckland | 09-411 7953
Back at their Matua Valley home, five minutes’ drive from Provenance, Scott and Jackie explain their ambitious approach. “It’s not about empire-building, but scale. Opening multiple restaurants is our path to total self-sufficiency, which has been our dream for a long time.” Next year they plan to add an organic dairy operation to their Waihi holdings which will supply all their restaurants with milk, butter and cheese (currently Jo Pearson and her chefs make their own soft cheeses at the Over the Moon factory in Putaruru. They’ll also use the Waihi creamery to make their gelato, the product which first started Scott and Jackie on their road to self-sufficiency. “We were opening the Takapuna Beach Café and thought, wouldn’t it be great to serve some really amazing gelato next door,” says Scott. “Our next thought was, let’s do it ourselves.”

THE POSTMANS LEG
43-51 Downing Street, Glenfield, North Shore, Auckland | 09-444 7325
Long before the dog and bone, news spread as far as the postman could roam. Legend tells of a Glenfield hero, a postie who left his mark. An amputee by virtue of a saw milling tragedy, he refused to let this put him on the back foot. Fashioning a feetless harness for his horse, he simply changed careers. For 1 years, rain, hail or canine, he provided a lifeline to the locals. So charge your glass as we salute a man with balls of steel and a leg of wood.
