A popular surfing beach, Peka Peka has fairly exposed beach breaks that have pretty consistent surf. It tends to receive a mix of groundswells and wind-swells and offers both left and right hand waves. Best around high tide. Rarely crowded.

Becoming one of the most popular beaches in the area, Kai Iwi beach is located 19 kilometres northwest of Wanganui.  The beaches locally habitat is popular during the summer holiday period with the Wanganui Surf Life Saving. Club patrolling during summer weekends and primary school holidays.Be wary of the many hazards and make sure you swim between the flags. The beach is good for swimming, surfing and fishing.

Castlecliff, a seaside suburb, is just minutes from the city centre. Offering the contempory New Zealand seaside holiday, Castlecliff offers a well established motor camp, playgrounds and direct accessd to a sandy beach with patrolled swimming.​ Castlecliff is Wanganui's prime surfing beach offering great breaks at the River mouth. At low tide your able to walk to the cliffs which many find enjoyable.
