One of Wellington’s most popular beaches, Lyall Bay is very accessible. There is a large surfing population, year round. The beach is safe for swimming and  has a slow incline. There are surf lifesaving services available.

​Days Bay is a quaint beach with light coloured sand, a slow incline and is a favourable swimming spot for families.  There is a barge which is usually full during the summer months to swim out to or if you'd prefer a bit of height for jumping theres always the wharf which is frequented by many a youth.  The bay has quite a few shops for you to enjoy when you want time away from the beach, there is also an extensive park which consists of a lake, bush walks, cafe, kiosk and large grassy area.​  How to get there: Catch the ferry from queens wharf in Wellington or drive around the bays from Seaview via Petone. 

Breaker Bay

Located on the western bank of Wellington Harbour, Breaker Bay is more popular for walking, fishing and surfing.  Swimming is not recommended due to the steep incline and dumping nature of the break.  Surfing at the reef along the western side of the bay is popular but shallow and dangerous. A visit to Breaker Bay is pleasant but going into the water for any activity can be dangerous.

Houghton Bay

Houghton Bay is a popular little beach for fishing, surfing and swimming with public amenities located at its eastern end. ​ The bay is small and waves can be nasty during southerly swells which is great for surfers but not so good for swimmers as it can dump on the beach. There is no life guard service.

Island Bay

Island Bay is home to numerous residential homes. The beach is safe for swimming  and the bay is nicely sheltered in average weather conditions. This combined with good facilities including a playground make Island Bay a great location for a family day.

Balaena Bay

Balaena Bay is very close to Wellington city, safe and popular with sun bathers and swimmers during summer. The beach slopes gently in to the ocean with limited facilities. The water can be shallow at both high and low tides. There is no life saving service available.
