HENDERSONS BEACH 
- 7km's South of Ngataki, Aupori Peninsula

 

Henderson Bay is a coastal beach isolated 7km's south of Ngataki on the Aupori Peninsula.  The beach attracts a large number of people during summer.

The beach is good for swimming if the surf is small, can get a bit rough with larger swells. The beach is popular for swimming, surfing, sunbathing and fishing. There is no Lifeguarding Service available and few facilities.

AHIPARA BEACH - 14km's Sth East of Kaitaia

 

Ahipara Beach is a popular swimming location during the summer. The beach has a slow incline with an even waves break all along the beach.

The south section of the beach is popular for surfing and fishing.

As with all beaches care needs to be taken for drifts and undertows.  The beach has good facilities including changing rooms, kiosk, parking, playground & toilets. Lifesaving services are on-hand during summer and school holidays.



Location: 14km's South East of Kaitaia.

MATAI BAY - 40 km northeast of Kaitaia

 

Matai Bay is regarded as home to the finest beaches in New Zealand offering magnificent sandy beaches stretching around clear waters. The bay is a popular spot for camping, snorkelling and fishing.  There is a DOC campsite nearby which is free of charge and offers limited facilities, see website below.

 

​Location: Karikari Peninsula, on Maitai Bay Road, about 40 km northeast of Kaitaia.

RARAWA BEACH 
- 7 km's nth of Ngataki, Aupouri Peninsula.

 

Rarawa Beach is popular in summer and is good for swimming, surfing and fishing. The beach has a DOC camping ground on the southern end.  There are few facilities; parking, toilets, shower.  There are no lifesaving services available.

MT WHIRIA - Opononi

 

Mt Whiria is one of the four sacred mountains of the house of the Ngāpuhi

tribe, New Zealands largest tribe. The mountain offers spectacular views from the top which will require a 30min hike to the top & pa site.

Whiria was the home of a large number of members of the founding family of Ngāpuhi.



Location: Cemetery Rd, Opononi.

MANGUNGU MISSION HOUSE - Horeke, Hokianga



Mangungu Mission House was completed in 1839 and contains relics of the missionaries who once inhabited it and of the township (Horeke’s) shipbuilding past. The section consists of a large stone cross and a simple wooden church. 

 

Location: Motukiore Rd, Horeke, Hokianga.
Hours: 12pm - 4pm  - Nov - Apr: Sat & Sun | May - Oct: Sun | Summer Thurs - Mon

ARAI-TE-URU RESERVE - Hokianga Harbour

​

Arai-Te-Uru Reserve is situated at the South Head of Hokianga Harbour on Northland’s west coast.  The reserve offers scenic views of the coastline and harbour.  The heritage walk will guide you through developed forest of flax, manuka, bracken, cabbage trees and pines.  The track follows the top of the cliffs opening out into a grassed area at the lookout at the top.

 

Location:  via the end of Signal Sation Road, from State Highway 12 travelling south from Omapere.

VILLAGE ARTS GALLERY - Kohukohu

 

Dubbed by some as the best art gallery in Northland, the village art gallery offers a range of exhibits by local artists.  The gallery is a non-profit charitable organisation which operates under the Kohukohu Community Trust, its aim is to support the areas art development.

TAPOTUPOTU BAY 
- 19km's Nth East of Waitiki Landing, Cape Reinga.

 

Tapotupotu Bay is one of New Zealands northern most beaches, located just a few kilometres from Cape Reinga. Tapotupotu Bay has a Department of Conservation camping ground located at its eastern end along side the stream mouth and tidal inlet. Here you will also find the public amenities. If entering the water while at the beach you should stay clear of the headland rocks and also the stream mouth. There is no Lifeguarding Service and the area is hard to access.

SPIRITS BAY
- 14km's Nth East of Waitiki Landing, Cape Reinga.

 

Spirits Bay is a popular beach during summer with tourists. The beach has a large camping ground which swells over christmas and gets good numbers over summer. The beach has few facilities; parking, toilets, shower.  The beach has no lifesaving service available.

COOPERS BEACH - Doubtless Bay

 

Coopers Beach is a beautiful beach offering white sand bordered by huge flowering pohutukawa which deliver a red ribbon of flowers along the shoreline. The beach is popular for swimming, walks and sunbathing. A popular beach in the summer months, the beach has limited facilities and no lifesaving service.

 

Location: Coopers Beach, Doubtless Bay.

TAUPO BAY - Whangaroa Bay

 

Taupo Bay has a strong residential base and is popular in the summer months.  The beach has a motor camp near by which increases the beach population substantially. The beach is very popular for surfing, the beach has a very good break with left and right breakers, not uncommon for tubing. There are reasonable facilities; parking, toilets, changing rooms, playground, showers.

There are no lifesaving services available.

 

Location: 24 km's east of Coopers Beach.
