MANGANUI BLUFF WALK - 40km's nth of Dargaville

 

The Maunganui Bluff offers breathtaking scenery. The Bluff comprises a 495 hectare reserve and is one of the few remaining examples of dense coastal forest remaining in Northland. The bluff rises 460m and is located on the Aranga Coast Road, 40 kms north of Dargaville. The walk is a 3 hour return journey to the summit.

COATES MEMORIAL CHURCH - Matakohe

 

The Coates Memorial Church is situated besides The Kauri Museum and is a tribute to the first New Zealand-born Prime Minister, Rt Hon Gordon Joseph Coates.  Coates was born in 1878 and raised in Matakohe, his term as prime minister was from 1925 to 1928 with his death eventuating in 1943.

​MAUNGARAHO ROCK - 11km's sth of Dargaville

 

​The Maungaraho rock is nothing special but does offer two walking tracks, the lower track circles the base rocky bluff while the other leads off this one to the top. The base track is a 45 minute walk, 

while the track to the summit takes 30 minutes. The track to the summit is steep and requires some climbing. In places ropes and ladders assist you.



Location: Mititai Road, Arapohue, off State Highway 12, 11 kms south of Dargaville.

MOREMONUI MONUMENT- Sth of Omamari

 

Moremonui Monument commemorates the battle between Hgati Whatua warriors and Ngapuhi raiders in 1807.  It's a 2 hour walk from Baylys north, or 1 hour walk south from Omamari. If your walking from Baylys Beach, the monument is situated on a low bluff at the mouth of the 3rd gully stream. From Omamari, it is south of the beach access point at the 1st stream.

​TOKA TOKA PEAK - 17km's sth of Dargaville

 

Toka Toka Peak is a rare phenomenon – the plug of an ancient volcano. The point is the hardened lava core with the material around the plug eroded away.  In Maori legend Toka Toka Peak is the resting place of one of 5 brothers who travelled from the East coast to the West coast beaches to gather toheroa, a local shellfish. but were stricken by fate, the hill marks his resting place.  In the pioneering days Toka Toka was used to watch for sailing ships in the Kaipara Harbour. The summit offers a spectacular view for the energetic tramper.

PIROA FALLS - 5 km north of Maungaturoto

 

Piroa Falls are formed of hard volcanic rock which has resisted erosion creating a spectacular waterfall into a deep plunge pool. They are very impressive after heavy rain while the pool offers a great swimming spot. The falls also offer a picnic area on the bank.  There's a 5 minute walk into the gorge, visit the site link below for more information.

POUTO LIGHTHOUSE - 69km's sth of Dargaville

 

Pouto Lighthouse is situated at Pouto Point and was built in 1884.  The lighthouse is 69 kms south of Dargaville on the Pouto Peninsula. You'll have to walk for 7km's along the Kaipara Harbour Mouth's northern shores and then a ten minute climb up sand dunes to the Lighthouse. The lighthouse is protected by the Historic Places Trust.
