Wainui Beach is popular in summer. The beach can be dangerous. There are frequent large waves at the beach and large rips and holes are common. It is advised to swim between the flags. The beach has lifesaving services on hand over summer and the school holidays and has good facilities.

Waikanae Beach is situated one kilometre from Gisborne City and is very popular. There is a motor camp directly behind the beach. The beach is popular for many activities including swimming, surfing, sunbathing and walking. The beach has good facilities and has lifesaving services throughout summer and the school holidays.

Waihau Bay

Waihau Bay covers a length of around five kilometres with a wave height of generally one metre. Be aware of the rocks and reefs. The best place for surfing and swimming is at the camping area located at the end of the car access to the beach. There are no Lifesaving services available and the beach has limited facilities.

Midway Beach is located a few kilometres south of Gisborne city and is very popular. The beaches main users are swimmers and surfers with the city's public swimming pool situated behind the lifesaving club. There are lifesaving services on hand during the summer months and school holidays, and the beach has good facilities.

Hicks Bay

A quiet township, Hicks Bay & Onepoto Bay consist of peaceful bays where you'll enjoy the laid back feeling of the east coast.​ Slow incline beaches, Long beach is popular for fishing while Onepoto Bay is popular for swimming. There are few facilities and no surf lifesaving services.

Waipiro Bay is a picturesque bay well known for its appeal and good surf. Its a slow incline beach with no surf lifesaving services available.  There are few facilities; car parking.

Tokomaru

Tokomaru Bay is a small community and popular for its beaches and idyllic scenery, the main beach has limited facilities; car parking, toilets, and has no lifesaving service.  The beach has a slow incline and is popular with surfers, swimmers and sunbathers.

Mahai Beach

Mahai Beach is situated on the Mahai Peninsula and offers a slow sloping beach with limited facilities; parking, toilets.  The beach is popular with swimmers, sunbathers, walkers and surfers.  There are no surf lifesaving services available.

Tolaga Bay

Tolaga Bay is safe and popular with sun-bathers and swimmers during summer. The beach slopes gently in to the ocean. There are two camping grounds on-site, one commercial and one free situated behind the lifesaving club. The beach has ok facilities; parking, showers, toilet.  There are lifesaving services on hand during summer and school holidays.
